Dubai Duty Free opened for business on December 20th 1983 and achieved first full year sales of US$20 million. In 2007, sales reached US$880 million representing a 24% increase over the previous year and had recorded a total of 18,995,635 sales transactions, translating to an average of 52,000 sales transactions per day, up by 18% on 2006.

In addition to being an innovative retail operator, Dubai Duty Free also runs innovative and successful promotions: the world famous Finest Surprise Luxury Car draw and the Millennium Millionaire. Both promotions have captured the imagination of travelers around the world and their popularity shows no sign of abating.

To date, Dubai Duty Free has received more than 140 awards from industry, media and government bodies which bear testimony to the operation’s retail success.

2007 was also a year in which Dubai Duty Free received international recognition from the media and duty free industry which culminated in the operation winning the prestigious Frontier award for ‘Airport Retailer of the Year’ in Cannes last October. Other top awards included the Business Traveller UK award and the Business Traveller Middle East award for ‘Best Duty Free Shopping’, along with the Raven Fox Award for ‘Middle East Travel Retailer of the Year’.

On a personal note, Dubai Duty Free’s Colm McLoughlin was presented with the inaugural award for ‘Outstanding Career Contribution to Airport Commercial Business’ by The Moodie Report – the most widely read online travel and retail information source.

In 2008, Dubai Duty Free received its first award of the year by being presented with the Global Traveler Award for the ‘Best Duty Free Shops’ at a glittering ceremony held in New York. The Global Traveler Awards are the result of a reader’s survey which attracted a record 15,828 responses. The 2007 survey included a ‘Best Duty Free Shops’ category for the first time.

On the sporting front, the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, which is owned and organized by Dubai Duty Free, was twice named ‘Tournament of the Year’ based on the votes of players and officials. In September 2007, the operation announced a US$9 million sponsorship agreement with Barclays who have become the title-sponsor of the tournament from 2008 – 2011.

Other sports benefiting from the operation’s sponsorship and support include major golf tournaments, including the industry-focused Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup, horse racing events, international powerboat racing, rugby and basketball among others.

Looking towards the future, Dubai Duty Free will continue to grow and expand in line with the multi-billion dollar expansion plans at Dubai International Airport.

The opening of Concourse 2 and Terminal 3 this year, will result in the retail operation more than doubling in size from the current 7,000 square metres to 15,000 square metres. In line with its expansion plans, Dubai Duty Free will increase its staffing levels from 2,000 to 3,000 in the coming months and will open a new Head Office, along with a new Warehouse and Distribution Centre in the first quarter of this year.

Dubai Duty Free is also planning the retail operation in the impressive Dubai World Central which will eventually handle 120 million passengers.

Dugas

The Dubai Natural Gas Company (Dugas) has played an integral role in the development of Dubai and has a history which reflects a resourceful commitment to its people and its future.

Dugas (wholly-owned by the Government of Dubai) was set up in 1977 to gather natural gas being flared offshore and, later on, onshore in 1989, and transported to the company’s Jebel Ali processing plant for separation into liquid products and residue gas.

The Jebel Ali Plant, at the time the most modern facility of its type, was inaugurated on April 22nd 1980 by the late ruler of Dubai, His Highness, Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum – Dubai was a producer, and exporter of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Liquid products are primarily exported to the world market, although some is supplied locally to the Government of Dubai owned Emirates Gas Bottling Company for domestic use. Dry fuel gas goes offshore as fuel for Dubai Petroleum Company (DPC) and Dugas production platforms.

Since those early days, Dugas has brought various expansion projects on line, increasing processing capacity. These include an additional gas processing plant to cope with additional quantities of rich gas from other sources, which necessitated extensive laying of additional gas pipelines.

Dugas has also been at the UAE forefront of environmental technology for industry. In 1992 it brought online a sulphur recovery plant allowing a high sulphur content gas stream to be processed while decreasing toxic emissions and enhancing the commercial value of gas. Dugas was awarded ISO 14001 certification for its Environmental Management System in 1998.

In 1994, Dugas expanded into the petrochemical business bringing on stream its MTBE plant which produces methyl-tertiary butyl ether, an additive for unleaded gasoline, now despatched world wide from Jebel Ali. MTBE helps raise the octane level of gasoline by supplying additional oxygen during combustion, allowing cleaner, more complete burning thereby reducing emissions.

Commitment to the development of the UAE and its people is reflected through Dugas’s strategic Manpower Development Programme, which is aimed at developing and enhancing the skill levels of nationals, thus ensuring the continued success of the company. Nationals now represent 45% of the company’s total workforce. The programme is in line with the UAE government’s plans to utilize and develop the country’s own human resources in local industry.
